What Is a Galley Kitchen?

A galley kitchen is a style of home kitchen that is set up in a single corridor with cabinets, appliances and fixtures on either or both sides. It is generally found in smaller homes, condos or apartments as an efficient use of minimal space. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Design

    • The galley kitchen may be open on only one end in which case it is sometimes shaped like a "U" or may be open on both ends to allow traffic to pass through.

    Characteristics

    • Generally less open floor space exists, while countertop and all upper wall space is highly utilized.

    Work Triangle

    • The kitchen work triangle comprised of the sink, stove and refrigerator is an important design concept to allow the cook access to all necessary work areas.

    Countertops

    • Countertop work space should be placed next to the sink and stove areas to allow for maximum productivity while cooking.

    Dining Area

    • A key missing feature is the dining area found in many kitchens. Galley kitchens may sometimes incorporate a dining area in the form of a bar-height counter facing into the sink area opening.
