Depending on the item you are painting, you may need to sand the surface of the item. This is especially important for glass and metal. Use fine-grit sandpaper and lightly sand the entire area. Make sure that you use fine-grit sandpaper because lower grit sandpapers can create large grooves and divots that can show up in the final paint application.
