Crafting your own wool combs is an affordable way to prepare raw fleece for spinning. Before you begin, analyze your wool for texture and length to ensure your comb is best suited for your wool. For example, tines with larger diameters work best with course wool. Likewise, smaller tines or nails are better suited for fine fiber. More rows are best for long wool staples, while fewer rows are needed for shorter staples. Lastly, fine wool requires close placement between the tines, while courser wool needs more space.
Step 1
Drill a row of 24 holes for 16d nails into the 1/2" x 4" x 24" piece of wood. Space each row 1/4 inch apart. Drill a second row of 23 holes for 16d nails. Offset the second row so each hole is between two holes in the top row.

Step 2
Drill a third row of 24 holes for 8d nails that line up with the first row. The third row will be for 8d nails. Make sure the third row is placed 1/4 inch below the second row.
Step 3
Cut the comb section from the rest of the wood, leaving 1/2 inch between the nails and the edge of the wood. Sand the wood and push the nails through.
Step 4
Clamp the wood so the nail heads are facing up.
Step 5
Mix the epoxy resin and catalyst into a disposable cup and quickly stir with a Popsicle stick.
Step 6
Coat the top of the nail heads with epoxy and leave to dry for approximately 24 hours.
Step 7
Use four wood screws to attach the second piece of wood perpendicular to the first piece. This will create a handle for the comb. Cut the end of the handle to your preferred length.
