Things You'll Need

  • Mild soap

  • Water

  • Towel

  • Screwdriver

  • 120-grit sandpaper

  • Drop cloth

  • Wood spray paint

  • Clear polyurethane spray paint

Spray painting is different from traditional painting in both the application technique and the environmental requirements. When you spray-paint an item, you literally spray the paint onto the item using an aerosol propellant, rather than physically applying the paint with a brush. To ensure proper coverage, it is important that you not spray paint on a windy day, as the wind makes the aerosol paint difficult to control. You can refinish wooden furniture using dark brown spray paint. Properly applied, spray painting gives a clean, natural look to your wood furniture.

Step 1

Clean the wood using a mild soap and water. It is important to wash the wood to remove all dust and dirt that will prevent the spray paint from adhering evenly to the surface. Dry the wood using clean towels after the wood is clean.

Step 2

Remove any hardware from the furniture to prevent unwanted painting. Most handles and door pulls are removed by unscrewing the handle itself or unscrewing or pulling from the inside of the panel.

Step 3

Sand the wood using a 120-grit sandpaper. Sanding the wood allows the paint to more firmly bind to the wood and is an essential part of spray painting wood furniture.

Step 4

Place a drop cloth under the furniture to protect the area below the furniture.

Step 5

Hold the can in an upright position approximately 18 inches away from the wood and apply an even coat of spray paint. Allow the paint to dry according the time specified on the can by the manufacturer.

Step 6

Apply a second coat of paint after the first coat has dried, using the same method as the first coat. Allow extra time for the second coat to completely dry.
