You do not need special molds or cake pans to create fun-shaped cakes. Creating shaped cakes is possible using round cake pans and some creative decoration.

Things You'll Need

  • Cake recipe
  • 9-inch cake pan
  • Icing in various colors including white, pink and blue
  • Colored piping gel
  • Colorful candy for decorating including licorice sticks, jelly beans and candy coated chocolate pieces or M&Ms

Purse Shape Cake

Bake and cool two nine-inch round cakes according to recipe directions.

Cut the cakes in half so that you have two half-moon shaped cakes.

Apply icing to the bottom and to the flattest side of one of the cakes. Stand the cake up on a cake plate. Attach the second cake to the iced cake. The icing will act as a glue to keep the cakes together. Ice the cakes until covered.

Using colorful candy and piping gel, decorate the iced cakes to look like a purse. Create flower shapes with jelly beans or create stitching along the edges of the purse cake using piping gel.

Mold a licorice stick into "U" shape to act as the handle.

Press the handle into the top of the cake and use icing to clean up the holes created.

Hat Shaped Cake

Bake and cool two nine-inch round cakes according to recipe directions. Set one cake round on a cake plate to serve as the hat's brim.

Trace a four-inch diameter circle on wax paper and cut it out. Using the stencil as a guide, cut the second layer of cake into a four-inch circle. Discard excess cake.

Gently center and place the smaller cake on top of the larger cake.

Ice the cakes in whatever color you would like your hat cake to be. Decorate with candy and piping gel if you wish.

Easter Bunny Cake

Bake and cool two-nine inch round cakes. Ice one cake with white icing and set in the center of a large cookie sheet.

Cut out bunny ears from the second cake by cutting a curve shaped slice out of opposite sides of the cake. The remaining cake should now resemble a bow tie.

Ice the bow tie shaped cake in blue icing and create polka dots by adding candy coated chocolate candy pieces or M&Ms. Gently place the decorated bow tie cake directly underneath the white iced cake round. The icing will act as a glue to attach the cakes together.

Ice the cake ears completely with white icing. Gently place one on each side of the top of the white iced cake round to resemble ears. The icing will act as a glue to attach the cakes together.

Decorate the bunny's face with jelly beans for the eyes and nose and use licorice sticks for whiskers and to create a smiling mouth. Decorate the bunny's ears with some pink icing.
