Use your computer printer for printing images on brown kraft paper.

Brown kraft paper sheets are used by artists and crafters for many different projects. Brown kraft paper is a thick, strong paper that holds up well to abuse. Kraft paper is used in printing projects to give items an old, antique look or feel. Printing with brown kraft paper in an inkjet or laser printer causes problems because of the paper's thickness. The printer uses a different printing method for brown kraft paper or other thick papers.

Step 1

Purchase brown kraft paper by the roll or sheet, or use paper grocery bags. Cut the brown kraft paper into 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch pieces of paper. If you cut paper grocery bags, cut off the thick glued area in the center of the back of the bag. It is too thick to pull through the printer.

Step 2

Turn on the computer, and find the document you want printed. Make any necessary changes before printing. If you are printing words on the page, you may want to put the words in bold, so it will show up better on the page. Remember, the paper is darker, colors like yellow and orange won't show up well on the paper, and other colors will look much darker than usual.

Step 3

Load one piece of paper into the bypass tray on your printer. Check you manufacturer's manual for the location of your bypass tray because every printer is different. The bypass tray keeps the paper from turning and twisting through the printer, so it has a straighter path. This keeps it from getting stuck. Do not put more than one piece of paper in the bypass tray at a time, or it will pull both at the same time. If it pulls both, it sticks in the printer damaging the print.

Step 4

Remove the paper from the regular paper feed source, so it doesn't pull both papers at the same time. The printer will automatically reset itself for printing from the available feed source which is the bypass. Click on the printer icon on your computer, and tell the computer to print. It pulls the paper in the bypass through the printer, and prints the image.

Tip

Flatten old grocery bags really well before using them in the printer. You may want to iron the paper on the cotton setting before using it for printing. If you use the iron, iron it quickly, and don’t leave the iron sitting on the paper.
