Things You'll Need

  • Colorfast bleach

  • Laundry detergent

  • 2 tennis balls

Bolster pillows are simply cushions that are shaped like cylinders and are either filled with cotton or down stuffing. The simplest way to keep pillows clean is to use machine washable covers or cases, but if you have a bolster pillow that you'd like to clean through and through you can use a simple squeezing technique that will gently expel excess dirt, body oil and other build-up from the pillow. The deep-cleaning process is thorough and efficient and only needs to be done twice a year.

Step 2

Add the instructed amount of liquid laundry detergent to the water according to the directions on the specific container, as well as a few drops of colorfast bleach. If your bolster pillow is white, you can use regular bleach.

Step 3

Submerge the bolster pillow in the bathtub.

Step 4

Squeeze the pillow under the water to make sure it fully absorbs the cleaner.

Step 5

Drain the water from the tub and immediately replace it with clean water. Squeeze the pillow beneath the water again to begin the rinsing process.

Step 6

Drain the tub and refill it again and continue to repeat the cycle until there are no traces of bubbles in the water when you squeeze the pillow.

Step 7

Squeeze excess water from the bolster pillow and place it in the dryer along with 2 tennis balls, which will keep the pillow fluffy as it dries.

Step 8

Set the dryer to the air dry setting and allow it to run until the pillow is completely dry.
