Make your baby a cuddly fleece lovey.

Animal head lovey blankets combine the softness of baby blankets with the friendly comfort of a stuffed animal's head. These soft blankets can be found at many stores specializing in baby goods. However, you can also craft your own to make your child's lovey more heartfelt. Sewing an animal head from comfy fleece and attaching it to the corner of an already-made baby blanket creates a cozy gift that your baby is sure to cherish.

Step 1

Choose an animal whose head you wish to sew. Animals that can be easily identified by the outline of their head work best for this project. A cat, dog, rabbit, bear, frog or monkey would be a good choice for an animal head.

Step 2

Draw the shape of the front of the animal's head onto the cardstock, making the edges about 1/4 inch larger than the desired finished size. Cut the template out with scissors.

Step 3

Trace the template onto the fleece fabric with the marker. Turn the template over and make a second tracing. Cut the two tracings out.

Step 4

Use the sewing needle and embroidery thread to add facial features to the front head piece. Simple lines and dots can form eyes, a nose, a mouth, whiskers, spots and any other necessary details.

Step 5

Hold the two fleece head pieces together with the right sides facing each other. The embroidery should be facing inward. Sew the sides together with the needle and sewing thread about 1/4 inch in from the edges. Leave the bottom side open.

Step 6

Turn the fleece piece inside out. Fold one corner of the baby blanket down to form an edge that is the same size as the bottom of the head. Sew the front of the head's bottom over the folded edge.

Step 7

Tuck the folded corner into the head, then fill the head with polyester stuffing. Sew the back of the head in place on the back of the blanket, directly behind the front piece's seam line.
