How to Improve Indoor Air Quality at Home: What Works
Most people assume the air inside their home is safer than the air outside. It isn't, necessarily. And knowing how to improve indoor air quality at home starts with understanding why that gap between assumption and reality exists in the first place.
Outdoor air pollution gets serious regulatory attention. Indoor air does not. Harvard's Joseph Allen, director of the Healthy Buildings program, has pointed out that the Clean Air Act has saved hundreds of thousands of lives, but "our indoor air pollution has continued to worsen" and no equivalent law governs what people breathe inside their homes, according to a Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health roundup published last week. The sources of that indoor pollution are mundane: gas-burning appliances, cleaning products, furniture and flooring that slowly off-gas chemicals, mold spores, pollen drifting in from outside. Delphine Farmer, an atmospheric chemist at Colorado State University, put it plainly: cooking on a gas stove and cleaning with common household products introduces chemicals into the air that most people never think about, Colorado State University reported in April.
The German practice of lüften opening windows and doors to flush a home with outdoor air, at least twice a day has spread across social media under the more digestible name "house burping." It's a reasonable starting point. But ventilation is a mitigation measure, not a solution, and what you do before, during, and after opening a window matters considerably more than the act itself.
This guide covers the full practical picture: when and how to ventilate, what to do about particles, how to reduce what you're putting into the air in the first place, and which combination of habits actually keeps indoor air cleaner over time.
Step 1: Check outdoor air quality before you open anything

Opening windows makes intuitive sense stale air out, fresh air in. But "fresh air" and "outdoor air" aren't interchangeable. Penn State's Institute of Energy and the Environment notes that in urban areas, outdoor particle levels can exceed acceptable indoor limits, meaning that opening a window can clear cooking fumes while simultaneously letting in emissions from cars and industry, Penn State reported earlier this year.
During wildfire events, the logic flips entirely. EPA guidance is clear: keep doors and windows closed to keep smoke out. Leave them open, and indoor particle concentrations will equalize with outdoor levels, according to EPA data last updated in October 2025. Farmer adds a longer-term warning: wildfire smoke compounds that enter a home embed themselves in carpets, drywall, and ceiling tiles, then slowly re-emit into the air for "days, weeks, months, potentially even years," Colorado State University reported in April.
Before opening a window, check AirNow.gov or a local air quality app for the Air Quality Index in your area. An AQI below 50 is generally good. Above 100 especially during fire season keep the house sealed and skip to Step 4.
One common mistake: opening windows right after cooking to clear fumes. If outdoor air quality is poor that day, this trades one problem for another. Use an exhaust fan vented to the outside instead, or run a portable air purifier on high while the window stays closed.

Step 2: How to improve indoor air quality at home through strategic ventilation
When outdoor conditions cooperate, ventilation is one of the simplest ways to make your home air feel fresher. The lüften approach calls for opening windows and doors to rapidly exchange indoor air with outdoor air at least twice daily, for roughly 15 to 20 minutes per session, Penn State reported. A cracked window admits far less air and produces far weaker results.
Ventilation helps most with gaseous pollutants: VOCs from cleaning products, paints, and off-gassing furniture, as well as CO2 that builds up in occupied rooms. Farmer notes that indoor CO2 above 700 to 800 parts per million outdoor air sits around 420 ppm signals poor ventilation and a high proportion of recycled indoor air, Colorado State University reported in April. Opening windows resets that ratio fast. Pairing window-opening with fans that exhaust air directly outdoors kitchen and bathroom fans, window fans, or attic fans creates active airflow rather than passive diffusion, Harvard recommends.
How to do this effectively:
- Open windows on opposite sides of the house to create cross-ventilation, not just one window.
- Run it for at least 15 minutes. A quick crack accomplishes little.
- Turn on kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans at the same time to pull stale air out actively.
- Best timing: mornings in summer before outdoor heat builds; brief sessions in winter when temperature difference naturally drives air exchange.
Keep in mind what ventilation doesn't do. Farmer's research found that once windows close, pollutant levels from surface off-gassing "come right back up," Colorado State University reported in April. It clears the air in the moment. It doesn't clean the surfaces the pollutants came from.
Step 3: Reduce what you're putting into the air in the first place
Ventilation dilutes indoor pollution temporarily. Source control eliminates it at the origin, and its benefits persist long after the windows close.
Penn State researchers identify small particles from cooking, candle burning, and certain cleaning activities as among the most harmful contaminants in typical indoor environments, Penn State reported. These are generated inside the home, which means no amount of airing out fully compensates for not addressing them directly.
Gas stoves deserve particular attention. Harvard experts recommend running a range hood that exhausts outdoors every time a gas oven or burner is in use, Harvard reported. Farmer goes further: open a window any time you cook, regardless of stove type, because all cooking generates particles and VOCs, Colorado State University reported in April.
Manufactured furniture, flooring, and cabinetry commonly off-gas formaldehyde a known carcinogen for months or years after installation, Colorado State University reported in April. Cleaning products and personal care items add more VOCs to that baseline. Harvard's guidance: use them sparingly, ventilate during and after use, and choose low-VOC alternatives where practical, Harvard reported.
Three steps that make a real difference:
- Run the range hood vented outdoors, not recirculating every time you cook, not just when things smoke.
- Open a window while painting, using aerosol sprays, or cleaning with bleach or ammonia-based products. If outdoor air quality is poor that day, run an exhaust fan instead and keep the window closed.
- Vacuum regularly with a filtered vacuum and wipe surfaces with a damp cloth using low-toxicity cleaners. This physically removes accumulated particles rather than redistributing them. Farmer's research found that surface cleaning done promptly after smoke exposure can permanently remove air toxics in proportion to the surface area cleaned the caveat being that cleaning needs to happen within days of the exposure event, Colorado State University reported in April.
Step 4: Filter what ventilation can't fix
As a general rule, ventilation works best on gases and filtration works best on particles. The two tools address different pollutants, and most homes need both.
Portable air purifiers are effective at removing particles from indoor air. Harvard's Allen specifically recommends units with HEPA filters, which capture fine particulate matter, Harvard reported. Farmer is direct about why particles matter: there is a direct linear correlation between PM2.5 exposure and mortality rates, with no known safe level, Colorado State University reported in April. Particle filters don't capture gas-phase pollutants like VOCs or formaldehyde that's what ventilation handles.
For HVAC systems, a MERV 13 filter run continuously outperforms a standard filter by a significant margin. EPA data shows that a high-efficiency HVAC filter on continuous fan mode can cut indoor PM2.5 concentrations by roughly 50%; even a low-efficiency filter run continuously reduces particles by about 24%. Combining a MERV 13 central system with a portable air cleaner pushes results further still. A PNNL study published last year found that in one residence during a severe wildfire event, adding a portable air cleaner to a MERV 13 system reduced the indoor-to-outdoor PM2.5 ratio from a mean of 0.55 down to 0.22 cutting smoke infiltration by more than half.
For the most reliable long-term solution, Penn State points to energy recovery ventilators (ERVs), which bring in a continuous supply of filtered outdoor air while exchanging heat and moisture with exhausted indoor air. Units run $600 to $1,500 on average and can reduce utility bills by 10% or more, Penn State reported. This is the infrastructure version of lüften continuous, controlled, and not dependent on remembering to open a window.
Practical steps:
- Check the HVAC filter rating. If it's below MERV 13, replace it. Switch the thermostat fan from "Auto" to "On" so it filters air continuously, not only during heating or cooling cycles. Inspect the filter every 30 to 60 days and replace it when it turns dark brown or black, EPA recommends.
- Place a portable HEPA air purifier in the room where the most time is spent. The bedroom is often the most useful place to start Farmer notes she runs one in her own bedroom around the clock, Colorado State University reported in April.
- Run the purifier continuously on the highest tolerable fan speed.
One caveat on purifiers marketed for "odors" or "gases": these typically use activated carbon filters, which can help with some VOCs but vary widely in performance and degrade relatively quickly. For gas-phase pollutants, ventilation remains the primary tool, not filtration.
Building a routine that holds up on bad air days and good ones
Penn State frames the honest limitation well: lüften and ventilation broadly are "mitigation measures, not solutions," Penn State reported. Pollutant concentrations drop while the windows are open, but the sources remain in appliances, in furniture, on surfaces and levels rebound once they close.
A practical routine combines all four steps. Check AirNow before opening anything. Ventilate with cross-ventilation and active exhaust fans when conditions allow. Run the range hood consistently and vacuum with a filtered machine to reduce what enters the air in the first place. Run a MERV 13 HVAC filter on continuous fan mode paired with a bedroom HEPA purifier to address the particle problem that ventilation alone cannot touch.
The routine shifts on high-smoke or high-AQI days. Keep the house sealed, lean on the air purifier, skip cooking activities that generate particles, and wait for conditions to improve before airing out.
Starting with lüften airing the house deliberately and regularly is, as Penn State puts it, "a good place to start with taking responsibility for managing the air quality in your home," Penn State reported. It costs nothing and it works. The steps from there are incremental, well-supported, and each one compounds the last.
