Construction Art Activities
Children love indulging in arts and crafts, painting, drawing and coloring. A fundamental part of learning is expressing creativity through art, and construction art activities are no exception. Teaching children how to construct various art projects is an effective way to incorporate science and math into art projects that hold a child's interest. There are numerous fun, interesting and educational construction art activities that are appropriate for children of all ages.

Hand Held Fans
-
Making a hand held paper fan is a simple construction art activity geared towards younger children. Children can use a standard sized or larger piece of construction paper to create a custom-made fan. Draw a picture with markers, crayons or water color paints on the paper and allow to dry if necessary. Then fold the paper back and forth to produce an accordion effect. Folds should be about 1.5 inches for a standard piece of paper, and correspondingly wider for larger paper fans.
Make-Believe Binoculars
-
Toilet paper rolls--commonly used in construction art Children are natural explorers and many enjoy playing with binoculars. Children can enjoy making and customizing make-believe binoculars with this easy construction art activity. Kids can tape or glue two cardboard toilet paper or paper towel rolls together, parallel to each other. Using kid friendly paints, markers and stickers, children can then decorate their creation.

Model Cities
-
Model cities--art construction for adults and older kids An interesting project for teachers to perform with middle school students is the construction of a model town or city. Children learn about architecture and construction procedures by using blue prints and various craft materials to erect a model of town, city or neighborhood. Children use blueprints of various architectural components such as doors, windows, chimneys and rooftops to trace and cut. The kids then pick and choose which components they choose to use and glue the cut outs to index cards to construct and decorate the make-believe buildings. This construction art activity is not recommended for children in the lower or preschool grades.
Egg Carton Dump Truck
-
One egg carton can make a toy dump truck. Making a dump truck out of a foam egg carton requires little more than an egg carton, scissors, glue, a straw and paint. Children can cut the carton into various sections, and then reconstruct the pieces with glue. After painting, simple details may be added with crayons or markers, and the straw can be attached as a smoke stack.
Clock
-
Making paper clocks helps kids learn to tell time. A popular construction art activity for children who are learning how to tell time is to make a clock out of construction paper. You'll only need three colors of paper, glue, a pencil and a brass paper fastener to complete this educational art project. Either print a template of a round clock, or draw one yourself. By gluing the clock face onto the construction paper, cutting out hands, and fastening them to the clock, children can create a make-believe clock with manually rotating hands.
