Ideas for Picture Pendants

Photo pendant necklaces wonderful gifts or mementos. They can be used to commemorate a milestone or even or to remember a loved one. Any photo can be used for making photo jewelry as long as it has been reduced to a small enough size. This can be done at any photo shop or even on your computer.

There are many different methods that can be used for making photo jewelry. They range from easy, pre-made kits to craftier versions made from scratch. No matter your skill level, making your own picture pendants is quick and easy.

Polymer Resin Photo Pendant

Polymer resin is ideal for making a thick, crystal-clear layer over surfaces. It is the equivalent of five or more layers of varnish. The resin is often used for sealing finished puzzles together, or covering table-top surfaces, but also has applications for jewelry making.

To make a photo pendant, attach a photo to a small piece of wood or plastic in the shape and size you want the pendant to be. Cut your own, or use objects like Scrabble letter tiles or bottle caps as a base for the pendant. Cut the photo so that it fits on the surface without any overhang.

Polymer resin is a two-part solution. Mix equal parts of both liquids and stir well. Place object with attached photo on a raised cooling rack like those used for baking to allow drips. Pour a small amount of resin in the center of the photo and allow it to spread and run over the edges. Be sure to follow all instructions on the polymer resin packaging for the best results. Glue a hasp to the top for hanging on a chain or cord.

Double-Sided Miniature Frame

A double-sided miniature photo frame can be made using scientific slide glass. These can be found at science supply stores and online. Cut two photos to fit between the slide glass. Place the photos back to back so that both images face outward and sandwich them between the slides. Seal the edges with a thin strip of metal tape around the entire perimeter. Glue or solder a hasp to the top, or sandwich it between the slides before sealing together.

Photo Jewelry Kits

Some companies produce special pendant picture frames that make creating photo jewelry quick and easy. These kits require limited craft ability. Simply trim a photo to the appropriate size for the frame, insert it into the frame, and snap the glass cover into place. These pre-made miniature frames are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes appropriate for many different jewelry applications.
