The Burning Candles
-
This game purports to give advance knowledge about money, travel and your love life. Light three candles, one pink, one green and one orange. Blindfold the person who's about to receive her fortune. Rearrange the candles, placing them as far apart as possible. Spin the person around three times, then have her blow out one candle. If she blows out the pink candle, she's in for romance. If the green candle is extinguished, money's coming her way. If she breathes out over the orange candle, she'll be taking a trip.
Half-Baked Games
-
According to HalloweenAlliance.com, baking charms into a cake was a popular Halloween game in the 1930s. Each charm was assigned a meaning, which was listed on a chart. When a guest found a charm in his piece of cake, he'd consult the chart to learn his fortune. Make up your own fortunes for an assortment of charms and brush up on the Heimlich maneuver.
This website also mentions a game called the Dough Test, as referenced in Mary E. Blain's 1912 book, "Games for Hallow-e'en." The party-giver wrote the names of single men and women on slips of paper and rolled each slip into a ball of dough. At the party, the dough balls were dropped into water and the first male-female pair to surface was destined to marry. Opportunities to weigh the odds in someone's favor are rampant in this game. Play it straight, or rig it so that the names of the most unlikely pair at the party pop up.
