Wearing wigs is not done just out of necessity anymore. Wigs have become a fashion statement, just like purses and shoes. People change wig styles and colors to match outfits. The wigs manufactured today are more life-like and natural looking than in the past, comfortably allowing the scalp to breathe. Keeping the wig snug and secure on the head requires knowing about the many different types of wig tape. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Using Wig Tape

    • While many people do not have problems keeping wigs securely in place, there are some who find that the wigs that stay secure are tight fitting. Wig tape or adhesives help to keep the wigs secure on the head no matter how windy it may be, or how much the person engages in strenuous activities. Wig tape eliminates the potential for the wig to slip out of position or fall off the head. Men also use wig tape to secure hairpieces or toupees to the head.

    Wig Tape

    • Wig tape is strips of double-sided adhesive tape that secure a wig or toupee to the head. Daily wear wig tape can be used for one to 10 days, and extended wear wig tape lasts from three to six weeks. There are many types of wig tapes that can be used, depending on the interior fabric of the wig or toupee, and the person's lifestyle and body chemistry. The double-adhesive wig tape is secured to the wig with one side of the tape and to the skin around the hair line with the other side. A strip of wig tape should be tested on the head to ensure there is no allergic reaction to the tape before using.

    How to Use Wig Tape

    • The skin around the hair line should be completely clean and dry before using wig tape. Remove the backing from only one side of the wig tape, and place it along the edges of the wig along the front, sides and back of the wig in sections. Position the wig on the head. Starting in the front of the head, lift the wig to expose the tape and begin to slowly pull the backing off the exposed wig tape. Fold the wig onto the head and press firmly. Continue with all strips of the wig tape until the wig is securely on the head.

    Securing Wig Tape

    • The wig tape can be put around the entire perimeter of the wig or just placed on sections of the wig. Some people find that only securing the front and sides is adequate for holding the wig snugly in place. There are many different types of wig tape, so experimenting with a couple to determine bonding strength is recommended. There are also wig tape removal products that are sprayed on the areas that were taped to ensure all the adhesive is removed from the skin.
