How to Set the Trim & Bleed in InDesign

Setting the proper Trim and Bleed in Adobe InDesign is critical when you are creating a job that will be professionally printed. Professional printers usually print multiple copies of your document on larger pieces of paper and the trim size sets the size for the final printed piece. If your document has color running to the edge of the sheet, then you need to build in a bleed to your document. The bleed allows the color to print off the edge of the document so when it's trimmed you will not see a white edge.

Instructions

    • 1

Select "Document" from the "New" fly-out menu under the "File" menu in InDesign. A "New Document" dialog box will appear.

    • 2

Type the width and heigh of your document in the boxes in the "Page Size" are of the "New Document" menu.

    • 3

Click the "More Options" button on the right side of the window if you do not see the "Bleed and Slug" section.

    • 4

Type numbers for the amount of bleed you want on the top, bottom, inside and outside. A standard bleed is 1/8 inch, however each printing press varies slightly so confirm the required bleed with your printing representative.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you need to modify the trim size or bleed of an existing document, select "Document Setup" from the "File" menu and type the new numbers into the "Page Size" and "Bleed" boxes.
