How to Do a Formal Chignon

A formal chignon looks elegant.

Chignon buns are perfect for just about any age and occasion. A messy, casual chignon is perfect for school or a day running errands. Formal chignons are best for weddings and proms. It is modern and classic at the same time. If you want a sophisticated look for a formal event, do a formal chignon. The main requirement for this style is hair at least shoulder-length.

Things You'll Need

• Wide-tooth comb
• Shine serum
• Paddle brush
• Bobby pins

Instructions

1. Comb through the hair with a wide-tooth comb. Focus on any tangles in the hair and create a smooth surface. Put two to three drops of shine serum in your hands and run them throughout the hair. This tames flyaways that could ruin the appearance of a formal chignon.

2. Use a paddle brush to push the hair back off of the face. Hold the hair firmly using one hand. Use the other hand to twist it tightly around itself to create the chignon shape. Use an index finger to hold the chignon in place at the back of the head and wind the rest of your hair around the chignon.

3. Tuck the ends of the hair underneath the chignon. Use bobby pins to hold the chignon in place. The exact number of bobby pins to use depends on the thickness of your hair. Place them all around, including on top and underneath. The chignon should feel totally secure.
