Use an attractive jar with a lid.

Plastic air freshener containers do not add to the decor of a country-style or traditional kitchen, but you can make your own scented gels to freshen the room. Pour the colorful gel into tiny jam jars to make appealing little items that will also scent the air. Combine different essential oils to create your own signature scent and color the gel with food color to match your decor. These little jars make personal gifts when you match the color and scent to the recipient's tastes.

Bring 3/4 cup of liquid potpourri to a boil in a sauce pan over high heat. Remove from heat.

    • 2

Stir in 1 package of Knox unflavored gelatin.

    • 3

Stir until the gelatin is dissolved.

    • 4

Stir in 1/4 cup of cold water and 10 drops of essential oil. Essential oils are available in drug stores and large grocery stores.

    • 5

Stir in liquid food color one drop at a time until you are pleased with the color.

    • 6

      Pour into two 4-oz jars.

    • 7

Allow the jelly to cool for 1 hour before placing the lids on the jars and screwing on the rings.

    • 8

Cut a 3-inch square of card stock and punch a hole in one corner. Write "Smelly Jelly Air Freshener, Remove Lid to Use, Do Not Eat" on the card.

    • 9

Thread the card on a piece of 1/3-inch-wide ribbon and tie the ribbon around the ring on the jar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cut squares of fabric with pinking shears to place under the ring of the lid. You can remove the lid and replace only the fabric when you want to use the jelly.

  • It is okay to use used canning lids on the jars.

  • Keep the smelly jelly out of reach of children.
