How to Make a Valkyrie Costume

Save

Valkyries are known as the shield-maidens of Odin, who is the ruler of of Asgard and one the most important deities in Norse mythology. Valkyries are often depicted as pale, blond warrior women. According to legend, it is the Valkyries' duty to ride through battlefields to select worthy soldiers for a place in Valhalla, a special resting place for those killed in battle. Though exact descriptions of the Valkyries' physical characteristics vary, a Valkyrie costume should include: a winged helm, long gown, blond hair and a shield.

Things You'll Need

  • Knitted hat
  • Duct tape
  • Poster board
  • Glue
  • White feathers
  • Blond wig
  • Cardboard
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Silver paint
  • Hole punch
  • Twine
  • White flat sheet
  • Safety pins
  • Belt
  • Knee-high boots
  • Gold jewelry

Winged Helm

  • Place a knitted hat on your head and tuck your hair into the hat completely.

  • Cut a 12-inch piece of silver duck tape and wrap around the bottom of the hat. Continue applying strips of duct tape until the hat is completely covered. Remove the hat from your head once it is covered.

  • Cut two 6-inch wings out of poster board. Glue white feathers to the wings. Attach the wings to right and left sides of the hat using two strips of duct tape. The wings should remain flush against the hat.

  • Wear the helm over a long, blond wig. Secure the hair in a single, long braid, if desired.

Shield

  • Cut a piece of cardboard into 2-by-4-foot rectangle. Place the rectangle on a flat surface; the long edge -- 4-foot -- should be vertical.

  • Measure 12 inches from the bottom right and bottom left of the cardboard and mark with a pencil.

  • Use a ruler to measure and mark the center of the bottom edge. Draw a diagonal line connecting the left and right marks to the center mark.

  • Cut along the lines with scissors. The bottom of the shield will now have a point. Discard the pieces you have cut from the shield.

  • Paint the front of the shield silver. Allow the paint to dry overnight.

  • Measure 1 foot from the top of both sides of the shield and mark with a pencil. Place a second mark 3 inches below the first mark.

  • Use a paper punch to make two holes on each side of the shield. Leave at least 1 inch between the edge of the shield and the holes.

  • Cut two foot-long pieces of twine or rope to make handles for the shield. Thread the ends of one piece of twine through the holes on the right side of the shield. Tie each end in a large knot. Use the second piece of twine on the left side.

  • Slide your right arm through right loop and hold the left loop in your hand to carry the shield.

Clothing

  • Wrap a white, flat sheet around your body and secure the ends over your left shoulder with safety pins. Use extra safety pins to close the sheet on your left side.

  • Fasten a wide belt around your waist. Wear clothing underneath the sheet to avoid a wardrobe malfunction.

  • Accessorize with knee-high boots and gold jewelry and wear the helm and shield to complete the ensemble.
