Making candles that look like food lets you create an original home décor accessory that is fun to craft and show to others. One great option is to fill a mug with a candle that looks like hot chocolate with whipped topping. The effect is so realistic that you and your guests will get thirsty just smelling and looking at the candle. Creating lifelike food candles is not difficult and takes only a little planning and basic candle-making material. There are many designs to choose from, or you can make your own mold for the candles. Once you make one, you will want to try another. They also make great homemade gifts for the person who has everything.
Things You'll Need
- Newspaper or other protective surface
- Candle wax
- Wax coloring
- Hand mixer
- Chocolate-scented oil
- Wick anchor (such as a wooden dowel)
Place a protective cover on the table to catch any spills or mess before beginning. Newspaper or other materials will work fine as long as it can be thrown out afterward.
Place the mug that will be used on the newspaper and begin heating the wax over the stove with the amount equaling approximately twice the size of the mug.
Attach the wick to an anchor and place it in the middle of the mug. Pour in the hot wax while making sure the wick does not fall in or tip over. To give a more realistic look and smell, add brown coloring and a chocolate scent to the mug of wax. Fill the mug to the top minus about a half-inch and pour the remaining wax into an old pot to be mixed later.
Place a frozen treat stick on the mug and allow the wick to rest against it in order to maintain the center position. Allow the wax in the mug to cool enough for the wick to hold itself up before continuing.
Whip the wax in the old pot with a mixer. It should take about 10 minutes to get a thick consistency such as that of porridge.
Add the whipped wax onto the chocolate wax until the desired amount of whipped wax is reached. Be careful not to allow the wick to move off center while adding the whipped wax. The whipped wax can be added to the mug using a fork and swirled around to give it the look of whipped topping.
Trim the wick to 1/4 or 1/2 inch above the whipped wax and enjoy the chocolate scent from your new hot chocolate with whipped topping candle.
