Bring the brightness of fresh flowers indoors, even if nothing is blooming yet. Make paper flowers any time of year, for any occasion. These flowers can be given to people who are allergic to real flowers, they can make unique party or wedding decorations or they can be used to decorate floats. One flower should take less than 20 minutes, a huge bouquet can be made in less than a day. Supplies can be found at hobby and craft stores.
Things You'll Need
- Tissue paper
- Green pipe cleaners
Select the colors of tissue paper to make the flowers with. These papers can be all the same color, or they can each be a different color for a variegated flower. Stack five layers of tissue paper on top of each other. Measure and mark an 8-inch square onto the papers. Cut along the lines through all the layers.
Accordion fold the papers, making the folds between 1/2 inch and 1 inch in size. Do this until the whole square is pleated. For instance, fold one edge of the papers up one inch. Turn the papers over, and fold that same edge up one inch. Turn the papers over and repeat. Do this until you run out of paper. When you are finished, you will have a series of pleats that look like the middle section of an accordion.
Fold the pleated paper in half. Use the scissors and make a V-shaped notch at the fold by cutting a triangle-shaped wedge on each side. Take a pipe cleaner and twist one end around the notch, with the pipe cleaner running through the fold itself. Twist the pipe cleaner together to secure. Once the pipe cleaner is secure, gently round the top edges of both ends of the pleated paper. Do this by cutting away the sharp corners with the scissors, leaving a rounded edge.
Open the fold, with the pipe cleaner facing down. Lift up the top layer of tissue paper on one side of the pipe cleaner and fluff the entire layer. Repeat this on the other side. Keep going back and forth until all of the layers on each side have been raised and fluffed out. The tail of the pipe cleaner is the stem of the flower. This stem can be twisted with the stems of other flowers to form chains or bouquets. Wrap the stem around a supporting structure or staple into place on floats.
Tips & Warnings
- Smaller or larger squares will make smaller or larger flowers.
- The edges of the flowers can be decorated with spray glitter.
- A quick spritz of perfume will scent the flowers.
- Use two pipe cleaners twisted together for large flowers.
