Instructions

    • 1

Draw your desired tie-dye design on the wall with chalk. You may choose traditional swirled colors or horizontal, vertical or diagonal stripes. Draw the lines straight; you'll be blending the sections later.

    • 2

Label each section with the color you want to use. Place coordinating colors next to each other. For instance, you wouldn't want to mix red and green because it creates a muddy color. Blue and green, red and orange, yellow and pink or pink and purple all work well.

    • 3

Paint two sections at a time with a darker shade of the hue you want to use. Brush a dry paintbrush back and forth over the edges of the sections to blend the edges of the paint and give it a tie-dyed effect.

    • 4

Let all your sections dry overnight.

    • 5

Dip fabric rags in lighter shades of each hue you used. Roll the rags up and down the appropriate sections, creating a mottled effect. This helps the paint look as if the "dye" soaked into the "fabric" unevenly. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours.
