How to Make a Princess Leia Costume for Toddlers

Dress up your toddler as Princess Leia from the Star Wars movies. Princess Leia wears several different costumes. Two more appropriates ones for toddlers are the Senate gown from "A New Hope" and the Rebel uniform from "Return of the Jedi." Because of the child's age, the costumes need to be modified not to include any small parts. For example, the belt Princess Leia wears with the Senate gown has small metal pieces on it. You would not include a representation of those on an outfit for a toddler. She could pick the pieces off and choke on them. Instead, paint them on the belt. Hairstyle is a major factor in the Princess Leia costumes. If you can't style your child's hair, look for a child-safe wig to use.

Instructions

  1. A New Hope

    • 1

Put the white dress on the toddler. Measure the distance around the toddler's waist while wearing the dress with a tape measure. Take the dress off the toddler.

    • 2

Cut a piece of silver fabric that equals the distance around the dress and measures two inches wide. Fold the edges of the silver fabric up just enough to create a hem. Pin the hem in place and sew to secure it. Remove the pins. Pin the silver fabric strip around the waist of the dress. Use a sewing machine to sew along the pins to secure it into place. Remove the pins after you sew.

    • 3

Measure out two pieces of silver piping long enough to wrap around the belt. Glue one piece on the top edge of the silver fabric and the other on the bottom edge with a hot glue gun.

    • 4

Cut out four or five ovals, about 1-inch across and 3/4-inches high, out of the gray felt. Dip the circle sponge into a small amount of paint. Press the sponge into the middle of the ovals to create the belt decoration. Wait one hour for the paint to dry before continuing.

    • 5

Glue the ovals to the silver belt with the hot glue gun. Leave 1/2-inch of space between each oval. The exact amount of ovals you need depends on the size of the toddler.

    • 6

Put the costume on the toddler once all the glue dries completely. Pair the costume with white rain boots. If possible, put her hair into two pigtail buns on either side of the head, right above the ears.

    Endor Rebel Outfit

    • 7

Cut 30 1-inch by 1.5 inch rectangles from the yellow felt. Attach the yellow rectangles in a line from the hip to the ankle on the outside of each leg with tacky glue. The long side sits horizontally. You may need to make more rectangles, depending on the toddler's height.

    • 8

Cut a 3-inch by 3-inch square from the gray felt. Draw four dark blue squares onto the felt, roughly half inch in size. Arrange the squares randomly. Glue the large felt square onto the right hand breast of the vest with tacky glue.

    • 9

Dress the toddler in a tan or khaki shirt, the vest and the pants. Tuck the shirt into the pants. Wrap a black belt around her waist. Put on a pair of black rain boots. Tuck the sweat pant legs into the boots. If possible, braid her hair and pin it to her head.
