How to Do a Fishbone Braid on People With Black Hair

How to Do a Fishbone Braid on People With Black Hair thumbnail
One person can have multiple fishbone braids.

Fishbone braids or herringbone braids can be tricky with African American hair because the hair is fragile and must be handled gently. These braids are not extremely difficult. They just require patience and an easy hand. Tension is the biggest problem associated with fishbone braids and African American hair. The tension must be held tight so that the braids look right, but if the tension is too tight the hair can break. Consistent tension is also required to make the braid uniform. Instructions

    • 1

Comb out the hair and straighten it with a straightening iron. Remove any tangles or knots in the hair.

    • 2

Gather the hair in the left hand and separate it into two sections. Place one section in the right hand and pull the hair gently.

    • 3

Select a small section of hair from the underside of the section in your right hand and pull it over the two sections to the left side. Hold the hair in between your thumb and index finger while you are pulling it across the two sections. The smaller the section of hair you grab and pull over, the more intricate the braid will be. Pull the hair tight without hurting the head or damaging the hair. Start soft and gradually increase the tension until it becomes slightly painful or the hair is taut.

    • 4

Choose a small section of hair about the same size as before from underneath the left hand section of hair. Place the hair between the thumb and index finger and pull it in the opposite direction as the previous section.

    • 5

Separate another small section from the right side and continue in the same fashion as before alternating sides until the braid is close to the end of the hair. Use the barrette or rubber band to hold the bottom of the braid.

    • 6

Care for you hair. Do not use any sprays, gels or mousses in your hair. These products dry out the hair and make it weak. Wash the hair once a week and use a leave-in conditioner. If styling products are needed use styling lotions. The hair can be rinsed in between washes, if necessary.
