Construction paper can be used in making a headdress.

The Order of the Arrow is a group within the Boy Scouts of America program. The organization, which has a Native American theme, allows the members to participate in learning activities, crafts and physical fitness. If you are hosting an Order of the Arrow event for your Boy Scouts group, you can put together a headdress craft to let each boy design a Native American headdress. Using basic materials like a paper grocery bag and construction paper, the kids can create a decorative item to commemorate the event.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a strip from the grocery paper bag about two inches wide about as long as the circumference of the head of the boy who will wear the head piece.

    • 2

Draw a pattern of your choosing using crayons. Draw circles, triangles and squares on the blank, brown side of the paper.

    • 3

Glue the ends of the paper strip together so that the drawn pattern is on the outside. Let dry.

    • 4

Cut about 10 long, thin oval shapes from different colors of construction paper. The ovals should be about five inches long and one inch wide.

    • 5

Glue one end of each oval to the inside of the paper headband, placing the pieces so they stick up like feathers. Let dry before wearing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fray the edges of the paper feathers by cutting slits, mimicking a real feather.

  • Wash hands of glue to prevent stained clothing.
