Crisco oils and shortening are primarily designed for use in your kitchen. But you can do more with the products than bake cakes and make salad dressings. You can also use them to make custom hand lotions. Use either plain Crisco shortening or original oil to make beauty products. Both are made from the oil of the canola plant, which is naturally low in saturated fat. Crisco products contain no additives or preservatives, which eliminates the risk of harmful side effects from prolonged skin contact.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 oz. Crisco shortening
  • 2 oz. beeswax
  • 2 oz. glycerin
  • 2 tsp. lecithin, liquid
  • 4 oz. distilled water
  • Metal bowl
  • Double boiler
  • Spoon
  • Glass jar
  • Crisco oil
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Fragrant oil

Combine 4 oz. Crisco shortening, 2 oz. beeswax, 2 oz. glycerin, 2 tsp. lecithin in liquid form and 4 oz. distilled water in a metal bowl.

Fill the base of a double boiler with water and bring it to medium heat.

Place the bowl over the boiler and stir its contents constantly with a spoon until they're evenly melted.

Transfer the mixture, while hot, into a glass jar such as those used for jam.

Allow to cool before use.

Apply the mixture in moderation after cleansing your skin.

Blend equal parts Crisco oil and petroleum jelly.

Add a fragrant oil, at least half a teaspoon for every cup of Crisco. Use a heady scent such as vanilla, almond or jasmine.

Scoop the mixture into a jar and store.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add food coloring to increase the visual appeal of Crisco lotion.
  • Your Crisco lotion will last for several months. Replace it if the oils separate or there is a noticeable change in the appearance, scent or color.
  • Do not use spoons, pots or bowls that you will later use to cook food.
