Homemade CB Radio Antennas

Citizen Band radios are popular with truckers and long distance drivers.

Citizen Band radios, also called CBs, are used to communicate via the public radio waves. These radios are popular with long-distance truckers or home enthusiasts. In order to receive the radio wave signals, the radio needs an effective antenna to pick up the waves and transmit. Make a homemade antenna with some firm wire found at home hardware stores and a chunk of coaxial cable.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 pieces 105-inch length of wire
  • Coaxial cable
  • Wire cutters
  • Electrical tape
  • Cutters

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the coaxial cable to the antenna attachments on the back of the CB radio. Most CB radios have antenna screws to mount the cable. Tighten the cable to the screws with the screwdriver.

    • 2

Place the four wire pieces on a flat work surface. Make sure the wire is stiff and strong. Wrap the four wires together so equal lengths run out from a common hub in the center where the four meet. Wrap the wires around each other and extend the ends out to make a dihedral shape.

    • 3

Run the coaxial cable to the center of the four wire antenna. Let the center of the coaxial cable touch the wires. Cut some strips of the black electrical tape and tape the coaxial cable to the center of the wire antenna.
