The narrow streets of Toledo, once a Roman town, are a popular destination for tourists visiting Spain. With Jewish, Christian and Muslim influences in its history and architecture, Toledo is known as the "city of three cultures." Most travelers make their way to Toledo from the Spanish capital of Madrid. The city is accessible by road and rail, and visitors can travel to Toledo by car, bus or high-speed train.

      Travel to Toledo by car. Toledo is about 70 kilometers southwest of Madrid and can be reached by driving on the A-42 highway, which is also known as the Autopista Madrid-Toledo. During peak hours, the road may be congested with commuters traveling to and from Madrid.

      Travel by train. You can travel to Toledo on high-speed trains from Madrid's Atocha Station. The high-speed AVE service makes the journey in 30 minutes several times a day, while the regional high-speed Avant service has more frequent departures and takes 33 minutes to reach Toledo. Tickets can be purchased online, at the train station or on board the train. From Toledo's train station, you can travel to the city center on foot, by taxi or local bus to the Plaza de Zocodover.

      Travel by bus. Buses to Toledo depart from Madrid's Plaza Elíptica bus station. The station is accessible from the city's gray Circular metro line. Buses operated by Alsa depart for Toledo every half hour from 6:00 am until 9:30 pm, with more infrequent service overnight. From Toledo's bus terminal, you can walk 20 minutes to the city center, take a taxi or travel by local bus to the Plaza de Zocodover.

Tips & Warnings

  • Gates for high-speed trains close 5 minutes before the departure time and queues to purchase tickets can be long. You should arrive at the train station at least a half hour before the scheduled departure time.

  • Toledo does not have an airport and the nearest airport is Madrid's Barajas International Airport, which is just over an hour's drive from Toledo.
