How to Make Pocket Scarves

Keep warm in the frigid winter air with pocket scarves made with fleece fabric. Pocket scarves are worn like other scarves, with the addition of deep pockets attached to both ends. If you have forgotten your gloves, your hands will stay toasty warm when inserted into the pockets. The length of the scarf will allow your arms to hang naturally or move about if needed. Fleece pocket scarves are quick to make, inexpensive and require no hemming of the edges.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 9-inch wide strip across the 60-inch width of the fleece. This is the main body of the scarf.

    • 2

Cut two more strips 9 inches wide by 13 inches long. These are the extensions for each end of the main body.

    • 3

Cut two 9-inch wide by 10-inch long rectangles for the pockets.

    • 4

Lay the main body of the scarf on your work surface. If your fleece has a right or wrong side, lay the fleece with the right side facing up. Place an extension strip wrong side up on top of one end of the main body. Match the width of the extension piece to the width of the main body. Pin one short end of the extension piece to the end of the scarf.

    • 5

Sew the pinned edge using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Repeat on the other end of the main body using the remaining extension strip.

    • 6

Unfold the extension pieces. Pin the raw seams flat against the scarf. Top stitch the length of the seam 1/4 inch from the stitch line. This will hold the seam flat.

    • 7

Lay the extended scarf on your work surface with the right side facing up. Place a pocket on each end of the scarf with the right sides facing up. Match the width of the pockets with the width of the scarf. Move the pocket up 2 1/2 inches from the ends of the scarf.

    • 8

Pin the long sides and the bottom of each pocket to the scarf. Sew along the pinned edges using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

    • 9

Lay the scarf with one end facing you. Cut 1/2-inch wide fringe on the end of the scarf in the 2 1/2-inch excess below the pocket. Cut from the end of the scarf to just below the pocket.
