Making Money Selling Personalized Gifts
Selling personalized gifts is a niche market that has the potential to make a creative entrepreneur a good deal of money. With startup costs of around $5,000 or less (depending on the type of gifts you're making), you can potentially start turning a profit in short order. The key is being able to create high-quality merchandise quickly and efficiently. Once you master the process, all that is left is to spread the word and get your personalized gifts into the hands of consumers.

1
Obtain the proper hardware, software and materials to create your personalized gifts. Since each gift is tailored toward a specific individual, you will need the means to create a unique product every time. The cost and type of equipment will vary based on the type of product you are selling. For example, hand-painted vases will require you to purchase vases, paint and brushes at minimum. Personalized coffee mugs on the other hand will require mugs, a good quality printer and special paper to affix to the mugs. Most materials you will work with can be obtained at craft or office supply stores.

2
Create a few samples. Few are likely to take you at your word that you can create a high-quality personalized gift without seeing proof that you've already pulled it off. Make sure these samples are not only high quality, but high quality you can produce on a consistent basis. If you can't reproduce what you're advertising, your business will dry up quickly.

3
Set up a website or, if you can afford it, a showroom to display your samples. This will give people a centralized location to view the personalized gifts you are offering.

4
Advertise your business. You're not going to make anything unless people know where to find you. Print business cards and put ads on websites, in newspapers or on radio or television. Word-of-mouth will be one of your biggest drawing points. A good idea to spread the word is by offering discounts or special offers for referrals. This is the quickest way to generate buzz around your business. The more buzz you generate, the more money you can make.
