Cast On and Divide Stitches

Using white yarn, cast on 40 stitches, leaving a 12-inch tail. Divide the stitches evenly around your double-pointed needles, and join to work in the round.

Turn, purl seven, then purl two stitches together.

Repeat from *** four times more, then turn, knit seven, knit two stitches together.

You will have eight stitches on your needle.

Purl across these eight stitches, then pick up and purl six stitches along heel flap edge.

Turn, knit across these 14 stitches, then pick up and knit six stitches along heel flap edge. You have 20 stitches on your needle.
