Instructions

    • 1

Have your child make a list of things they may want for Christmas. You might use this as an opportunity to teach children about the spirit of giving by having them include wishes such as a healthier environment or peaceful world. Try to guide them towards toys that you may actually purchase for them by making subtle suggestions so that they will get some of the things on their list.

    • 2

Create an outline for the letter to Santa. Teach children how to write an introduction, body and conclusion to the letter. Explain that letters to Santa usually start with Dear and end in sincerely with them signing their name. Encourage them to capitalize and use punctuation as well. Have older children assist youngsters in writing and refining their Santa letter to make it a fun family affair.

    • 3

Write the letter by following the outline. Children should place their requests in the body of the letter. You might encourage children to ask about Santa's reindeer and Mrs. Santa Claus to add a realistic tone to the letter. In addition, children might explain to Santa how there will be cookies or other treats waiting for him when he comes to their home. Have them include details such as whether there is a chimney or any questions they might have about how Santa will enter the home.

    • 4

Decorate the letter using crayons, markers, glue and sparkles. Have children use Christmas colors or use their imaginations to personalize the letter. Be sure glue has dried before folding the letter to send so it will not stick together.

    • 5

Send the letter using an online service or through the post office. If using the post office, place the envelope in either a Priority Mail or First Class Mail Envelope addressed to North Pole Christmas Cancellation, Postmaster, 5400 Mail Trail, Fairbanks, AK 99709-9998. They may even receive a response from postal or independent volunteers.
