How to Install a Shower Floor Membrane
The membrane shower pan liner helps keep water from splashing out of the shower and prevents tiles from leaking. The membrane also guides water from the floor of the shower to the drain. A loose shower membrane will cause leaks to appear and cause fungus to grow on the shower floor. Even worse, a loose membrane allows water to seep into the underlying material that the shower is built on. Prevent leaks by installing a membrane when the shower itself is installed. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure 9 inches from the drain up the shower basing walls. Lap the membrane either 9 to 12 inches, depending on how much material you have. A 12-inch overlap is desirable.
-
2
Pound down any nails that are in the floor, so that they are recessed to prevent membrane punctures in the future.
-
-
3
Rout a channel into the subfloor that allows the drain assembly to sit flush with the subfloor, so that the shower membrane drains directly toward it.
-
4
Mix cement mud according to the instructions on the packaging, but leave the material a bit thick so that it stays in space when spread.
-
5
Lay the shower membrane in the shower adjusting it until it fits perfectly. Push the membrane into corners until all the wrinkles are out. Apply rubber cement to the liner that is surrounding the drain. Cement 1/2 inch to 1 inch of material around the drain. Place waterproof tape around the corners to seal the material.
-
6
Hold your cement boards 1 inch above the bottom of the membrane. Trace the area of the cement board and lay aside. Apply your cement to the membrane, and place the cement board over the membrane material. Allow to dry.
