How to Make Multi-Colored Vinyl Decals

How to Make Multi-Colored Vinyl Decals thumbnail
You can create your own multi-colored decals from vinyl.

Vinyl decals are ideal for any situation in which you want to apply a sticker, but don’t want to worry about the hassles of removing it later. They can be placed on a wall, window, T-shirt, car windshield, miniature or any other surface where you want to apply your decal. Making decals that feature multiple colors is not advised for large decals. However, multi-colored vinyl decals are easy to create for small projects.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a design for your vinyl decal. Small designs--less than 10 inches in length and width--work best for this project. For your first decal, pick a design with simple, clean lines that do not overlap. Start with two colors and build from there. The more colors you use, the more difficult it will be to create your decal.

    • 2

In a photo-editing program on your computer, remove any unnecessary shading or gray tones in the photo you've chosen. Remove any extra lines or colors that might compromise the integrity of your decal once you print it. Thicken the lines of your design if needed.

    • 3

Separate the colors in your vinyl decal. To do this, hold your control key and select each piece of your design that is the same color. For example, if you are editing a red and white photo design, select each red piece of the design while holding the control key. While the pieces are still selected, copy and paste them onto a separate document.

    • 4

Print out your images on separate pieces of vinyl. Insert your vinyl piece into your printer as if you were printing an ordinary text document. Make sure your color ink is in place. Do a separate piece of vinyl for each color.

    • 5

Cut your decal to size. Remove the adhesive backing from your top color of vinyl. Line up your design and apply it to your second piece of vinyl. Before applying your vinyl decal, remove the backing from your bottom decal. Smooth over the top of your design with a flat edge.
