How to Design Western Parade Floats

Designing a Parade Float

Designing a western-themed parade float requires cooperation and teamwork by a group of individuals. Safety will need to be considered while brainstorming a parade float to keep the builders and parade participants out of harms way. Limitations to consider include the size of the work space, ability of the people building the float, time constraints, parade guidelines, and resources available. Knowing the size of the float base will help insure that the western-themed design will have adequate room to be built.

Instructions

  1. Process

    • 1

Gather the float committee together in a designated area. Appoint an individual in-charge of taking notes and an individual in-charge of drawing sketches.

    • 2

Discuss parade guidelines and possible sizes of the float. Brainstorm western themed ideas and write them down. Stop the brainstorming session after 15 to 20 western themed ideas have been discussed.

    • 3

Discuss each western float idea until 3 to 5 plausible ideas remain. Brainstorm and sketch possible designs of how each of the 3 to 5 plausible float ideas will appear. Place all drawings out on the table or on the wall.

    • 4

Discuss each sketch and what could be done to enhance the western theme idea including colors, clothing design, hats, types of horses, western landscape, etc. Eliminate those that have possible building issues, would be too time consuming, or would cost more than the allotted budget until the top 2 ideas remain.

    • 5

Vote between the remaining two ideas to determine what western themed float design will be built.

    • 6

Determine who will be in-charge of creating the float building time-line, a work schedule for float builders, purchasing or gathering float material, getting the float base (trailer) to the designated building area, locating a vehicle to pull the float, getting volunteer builders if necessary, and collecting donations.

Tips & Warnings

  • Western themes generally depict cowboys and cowboy apparel, horses, old west towns, cows and landscape from the United States southwest.
