A good pair of fabric scissors is an essential tool in clothing alterations.

Old t-shirts may seem useless, especially if it is a men's T-shirt in the hands of a woman. With common sewing supplies, an amateur seamstress can turn an oversized men's t-shirt into a cinched and stylish peasant top.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the T-shirt inside out and fold the bottom up 1/2 inch. Sew the fold down and leave a 1-inch opening.

    • 2

Measure the circumference of the wearer's hips and cut a piece of elastic to that length.

    • 3

Thread the elastic through the 1-inch opening in the hem of the shirt, gathering the fabric as you work.

    • 4

Sew the ends of the elastic together and sew the 1-inch opening closed.

    • 5

Fold over the sleeve hems 1/2 inch and sew the folds in place, leaving a 1-inch opening in each of the hems.

    • 6

Cut two pieces of elastic that are long enough to wrap around the upper arm. Thread these elastic pieces through the sleeve hems using the 1-inch openings and gathering the fabric as you work.

    • 7

Sew together the two ends of the elastic pieces in each of the sleeves and sew the 1-inch openings closed.

    • 8

Cut the collar off the shirt and cut the neckline open so that it is 12 inches wide on each side. Fold the raw edges of the collar down a 1/2 inch and iron the fold down.

    • 9

Sew down this fold, tucking the raw edges of the fabric under as you go and leaving a 1-inch opening in the back.

    • 10

Cut out a piece of elastic that is 20 inches long. Thread this elastic piece through the neckline of the shirt, using the 1 inch opening and gathering the fabric as needed.

    • 11

Sew the two ends of the elastic together and sew the 1-inch opening closed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a strip of the extra fabric from the neckline to tie around the waist as a belt.
