How to Make a Caterpillar Out of Grass Seed & Panty Hose

Children often love both bugs and crafts. Creative parents and teachers can combine these two interests into a little grass garden with an original shape. Caterpillar grass gardens are easy to make and look really cute when finished; one of the best parts is that children have the option of customizing their caterpillars. Though the caterpillars don't need faces and antennae, children will have a good time making these parts of the project. Place the caterpillars at the edges of your yard or garden as quaint decoration.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 1 tbsp. of wheatgrass berries with each cup of potting soil you intend to use. For instance, if using 5 cups of potting soil, add 5 tbsp. of wheatgrass berries. Stir the dirt and berries together in a large bowl.

    • 2

Cut a leg from an old pair of pantyhose. Fill the leg with soil and seed up to about 4 inches below the opening. Tie the opening off. Give the caterpillar sections by securing colored elastic bands around it at 4-inch intervals.

    • 3

Fill a plastic tub with room temperature water and immerse the caterpillar for about 10 minutes. Remove it from the water and place it in a plastic bag. Allow it to sit for 8 hours.

    • 4

Remove the caterpillar from the bag. Glue two plastic eyes to one end of the caterpillar. Stick some pipe cleaners for antennae into the nylon so they stick straight up. Use colored glue to paint a smile and a nose to complete the face.
