Instructions

    • 1

Rub medium- to rough-grit sandpaper all over the wood. Wrap a piece of sandpaper around a wood block for ease of use. Rub sandpaper in the direction of the wood grain removing as much of the existing varnish as possible. Even if there is no existing varnish, the sandpaper will aid in creating a worn look.

    • 2

Paint the furniture with latex paint. Rub a stick of wax all over the furniture and apply a second coat of paint in a different color. Use sandpaper to scratch off the top coat of paint in areas that generally experience wear and tear. The wax will help the second coat of paint rub off.

    • 3

Apply stain using a paintbrush. Do not use too much. Go quickly and change direction often so that brush strokes will be exposed. Application of stain is only necessary if you did not paint the furniture.

    • 4

Apply a thin coat of varnish for shine, using a paint brush. Varnish will protect the distressing of your pine furniture, although you can use sandpaper to scratch off varnish on edges, adding to the distressed look.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take furniture pieces outdoors when applying paint, stain or varnish. If the piece is too big to take outside, open windows and doors for ventilation. Wear protective goggles and gloves when applying these products.
