How to Make Tea Light Holders

How to Make Tea Light Holdersthumbnail
Tissue paper can give a glass jar a stained glass look.

Tea light candles are tiny, and it sometimes takes several of them to make an impressive display in your home. The shallow metal tray the tea lights come in requires some sort of small holder. You can make beautiful candle-holders out of baby food jars, creating works of art that the whole family will enjoy making together. Decorate them in red and green for the Christmas holidays, autumn colors for the fall months, or pink and white for Valentine's Day or Mother's Day.

    Things You'll Need

    • Clean, empty baby food or other small jar
    • Colored tissue paper
    • Scissors
    • School or decoupage glue
    • Sponge or craft paintbrush
      • 1

Cut different shapes out of colored tissue paper. Depending on the size of your jar, these should probably be 1 inch or less in size. Use two or more colors of tissue paper to give your tea light candle-holder a stained glass look.

      • 2

Thin some regular school glue with a little bit of water or use decoupage glue.

      • 3

Paint the outside of a baby food or other clean, small jar with the thinned glue mixture, using a small sponge or craft paintbrush.

      • 4

Place the pieces of tissue paper all over the jar. Work quickly so that the glue does not dry before the jar is totally covered.

      • 5

Apply a second coat of the thinned glue over the areas you covered with the tissue paper. This will give the jar a shiny finish. Allow the art project to dry completely.

      • 6

Place a tea light candle into the bottom of the decorated jar. Light the candle and watch the beautiful colors as the flame flickers.
