How to Add a New Ball of Yarn

How to Add a New Ball of Yarn thumbnail
Add more yarn to your work.

Very few crochet or knitting projects use only one color, requiring the maker to add a new color and change balls of yarn. Even if the project contains a single color, a single ball of yarn isn't enough to complete most projects---also requiring an additional ball of yarn. Adding more yarn to your projects is not difficult; it just takes a little planning.

Instructions

    • 1

Knit or crochet out to the end of a row. Unravel your current color or yarn ball out about 6 inches and snip it. Lay it aside.

    • 2

Unravel a strand from your new color or ball of yarn out about 6 inches. Lay it perpendicular over the base of the strand hanging from your piece.

    • 3

Cross the lower strand over and under your upper strand in a half-granny knot.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 to secure the yarn pieces in a square knot. Make the knot as close to your piece as possible.

    • 5

Crochet or knit the new ball or color into your piece, letting the 6-inch strands hang freely. When finished, weave them into the sides or back of your piece and secure the ends with a drop or two of liquid stitch.
