How to Make Hemp Jewelry Knots
One of the simplest and most popular applications of macrame crafting is the creation of woven hemp necklaces. Though popularized today by the "surfer" necklaces made of hemp and sea shells, hemp necklace designs can incorporate any pendant or bead designs you want. Before making these kinds of decisions, of course, you must learn the process of doing a hemp weave through knot-tying.

Cut four strands of hemp string. Make two of them twice the length you want your necklace to be when finished and make the other two six times this length.

Join the four strings in a bundle. Lay them side by side, ends lining up, and join them all with a single knot, leaving a "tail" of about 2 inches.

Grip the bundled strings with the knot and tail poking out from the top of your hand and facing away from you. Hold the bunch as if you were about to form a braid.

Position the long strings on the outside of the bundle and leave the short strings in the middle of the bunch. The short strings will form a sort of core or spine at the center of the macrame weave, with the knots being formed on the outside of this.

Cross the string on the right over the center strings. Weave it underneath the string on the left.

Grip the string on the left and cross it underneath the center strings to bring it to the right side.

Tie a knot on the right side by weaving the same string through the loop formed by the string on the right. Tighten this by pulling the two outside string tails at the same time.

Tug on the two center strings to ensure they don't bunch up.

Repeat steps 4-7 if you want to make a twisting, spiral weave. Continue repeating to weave the necklace.

Mirror the process for the knot you made in steps 4-7 if you want to create a flat weave; do everything the same way, but cross the string on the left over to the string on the right, then wrapping the right string beneath the center strings to tie it on the left side. Alternate between these two kinds of knots to weave the necklace.
