How to Make a Ladybug Diaper Cake
A diaper cake is a decorative way to present a new parent with an extremely practical gift. Once you master the basic process of creating the diaper cake, you can add more diapers to form large, three- or four-tier cakes if you wish to give a larger gift. Embellish the cake with clay ladybugs and polka dot ribbons to match a ladybug baby shower theme or add a burst of color to your plain diaper cake. Does this Spark an idea?

- 24 diapers
- Rubber bands
- Cake board
- Wooden dowel
- Ribbon
- Red polymer clay
- Black polymer clay
- Double sided tape
- Silk flowers

Roll a diaper tightly into a tube starting at the top of the diaper. Secure the diaper in the center with a rubber band to hold the shape. Continue to roll additional diapers to make your cake. You will need approximately seven diapers for the top tier and 17 diapers for the bottom tier, although you can make the diaper cake as large or small as desired.

Place seven upright rolled diapers together in a circle, and secure them with a large rubber band. This forms the top tier of your ladybug diaper cake. Repeat this process with 17 diapers to form the bottom tier.

Place the bottom tier of your ladybug cake onto a 10-inch or larger cake board. Set the top tier on top of the bottom tier, and insert a wooden dowel through the center of both cakes to hold them together.

Tape a length of ribbon around the center of each tier to cover the rubber band. A red ribbon with black polka dots will match the ladybug theme of your diaper cake.

Roll red polymer clay into several 1/2-inch to 1-inch diameter balls to form ladybugs. Decorate the ladybugs with spots of black polymer clay. Let your ladybugs air dry, or bake them according to the directions on the packaging of your polymer clay.

Attach the clay ladybugs to the cake with double-sided tape. This will hold the ladybugs in place without damaging the diapers so that the recipient can still use them.

Push the stems of several silk flowers into the center of the top cake tier to create a floral cake topper for your ladybug cake.
