How to Measure for a Double Headboard
For people who have bed frames, but no headboard, the bedroom may look unfinished. A headboard to go along with your bed can complete a room and spice up the décor. You can find brand new headboards at furniture and department stores or you can browse through flea markets, yard sales and thrift stores looking for the needed addition to your bedroom. Before you go headboard shopping, take the proper measurements, especially if you want your headboard to attach to a double bed frame. If you buy the wrong size, it will not work. 1
Keep in mind that the mattress of a double bed’s standard measurement is 72 inches by 52 inches, but you need to measure your bed frame for exact measurements, as these might vary a little bit from company to company.
-
2
Move the double bed away from the wall so you can properly measure the frame at the head of the bed.
-
-
3
Look for the portion of the metal frame that has holes--this is where you can screw a headboard to the frame.
-
4
Place the measuring tape on the outside edge of the hole closest to the outside of the bed frame. Measure from this point to the same point on the other leg of the double bed frame. Write down the measurement.
-
5
Measure from the floor up to the top of the mattress and write down this measurement. The height of the mattress is important when choosing a headboard, as short headboards may not come up above very thick mattresses.

Tips & Warnings
Choose a headboard that comes as close as possible to the measurements, especially the width from one leg of the bed frame to another. Choose a headboard that comes within ½ inch of the width measurement as you can manipulate the frame a little bit for proper fitting, but not much.
Using a metal measuring tape is helpful for this task. It holds its shape and also hooks onto one side of the bed frame while you measure to the other side. A regular sewing measuring tape is too flimsy.
Measure across the width of the bed frame--there is no need to measure the length, as the headboard will fit across the width.
