Instructions for Making Christmas Ornaments Out of Light Bulbs

Save

Recycle old light bulbs by making Christmas ornaments. Instead of throwing away your light bulbs, you can turn them into craft projects. Light bulbs allow you to make a wide variety of Christmas ornaments, and they are simple enough for children to decorate. Once you collect the light bulbs, you only need to make a quick trip to the craft store before you can begin making your own homemade ornaments.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Flour
  • Newspaper
  • Brown paint
  • Empty egg carton
  • Wiggly eyes
  • Glue
  • Red pom-pom
  • Black paint
  • Brown felt
  • Ribbon (1/2-inch-thick)
  • Cotton ball
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • White craft paint
  • Artificial snow
  • Toothpick
  • Orange paint
  • Permanent marker
  • Fabric
  • Small twigs
  • Craft wire

Reindeer Light Bulb Ornament

  • Combine two parts water with one part flour. Mix the ingredients until a thick paste forms.

  • Tear small strips of newspaper no larger than ½-inch wide. Dip the newspaper strips into the paste, and run your fingers along the strips to remove excess paste.

  • Place the newspaper strips on the light bulb. Cover the light bulb with one layer of newspaper strips. Cover the metal end of the light bulb as well. Allow the layer to dry, and then apply two additional layers. Allow each layer to dry before applying the next.

  • Paint the light bulb brown. Place the light bulb in an empty egg carton to aid you during this process. Allow the paint to dry.

  • Point the neck of the light bulb up. Glue on a set of wiggly eyes onto the wide part of the light bulb. Glue on a red pom-pom for the nose, and paint a mouth on with black paint.

  • Cut out the antlers from brown felt. Trace three of your fingers on the felt for best results. Glue the antlers on the back of the light bulb on each side of the neck.

  • Wrap a piece of ribbon onto the neck of the light bulb. Form a loop large enough to hang the light bulb ornament, and glue the ribbon to the back of the reindeer.

Snowman Light Bulb Ornament

  • Clean the light bulb off with a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol. Dry the light bulb off before you paint it. Paint the bulb with white craft paint. Place it in an empty egg carton to allow it to dry.

  • Spray the light bulb with artificial snow. Allow this to dry.

  • Draw two black eyes on the snowman at the base of the light bulb. Use a permanent marker to form the eyes.

  • Paint the tip of a toothpick orange. Cut the tip of the toothpick off because this will form the snowman's nose. Glue the toothpick end centered underneath the snowman's eyes.

  • Decorate the snowman ornament. Draw buttons with a permanent marker, wrap fabric around the base of the light bulb to form the black hat, glue small twigs on for arms or make a scarf with a piece of fabric. Wrap a piece of craft wire around the base of the light bulb to hang the ornament on the Christmas tree.
