How to Make Adult Fairy Costumes

An adult fairy

Fairy costumes are among the most popular during Halloween for little girls and grown women alike. While adult fairy costumes look much different than children fairy costumes, they are made very similarly. The difference between the two lies in the fit of the costume, the choice of accessories, and the application of makeup. Although fairy costumes are abundant in stores around Halloween, they are usually expensive. Any amateur seamstress can make her own fairy costume with basic sewing and craft supplies.

Instructions

  1. The Wings

    • 1

Cut out two pieces of fabric each in shape of fairy wings. Each wing should be about 36 inches long and 12 inches wide. Fold over the edges of the fabric 1/2 inch.

    • 2

Sew down the folded-over edges, tucking the raw edge of the fabric under as you sew. Leave a 1-inch opening in the seam on each wing.

    • 3

Thread some craft wire through each wing, using the 1-inch openings. Twist the ends of the wire together and sew the openings closed.

    • 4

Cut a piece of elastic that is 6 inches long. Sew the middle of one wing to each end of the elastic so that the two wings are connected by the elastic.

    • 5

Cut two pieces of elastic that are each 14 inches long and sew each of them into a loop. Sew one loop to the middle of each wing, directly over the other piece of elastic. To wear the wings, slip the elastic loops around the arms.

    The Skirt

    • 6

Cut out a piece of fabric that is 18 inches wide and long enough to wrap around the hips plus 2 inches. Fold the fabric in half (right sides together), bringing the shorter edges together.

    • 7

Sew the short edges (opposite the fold) together, forming a tube of fabric. Fold over one of the raw edges of fabric 3/4 inch.

    • 8

Sew the 3/4 inch fold down, tucking the raw edge of the fabric under as you go. Leave a 1 inch opening in the hem.

    • 9

Cut a piece of elastic that is just long enough to wrap around the waist. Thread this elastic piece through the hem, using the 1-inch opening.

    • 10

Sew the ends of the elastic together and sew the 1-inch opening closed. Cut the other raw edge of the skirt into a zigzag pattern.

Tips & Warnings

  • To distinguish this costume from child-like fairy costumes, wear glittery eyeshadow and lip gloss. Use eyeliner to draw swirls at the corners of the eyes.

  • Pair the outfit with high heels and a corseted top.
