DIY Paper Photo Frame

DIY Paper Photo Frame thumbnail
Colorful sheets of paper make wonderful photo frames.

Buying frames for all your photos can become expensive. Making your own photo frames using paper and simple origami folding techniques saves money and adds a decorative touch to the photograph's display. You can choose the color and pattern to go with the room or picture itself. With only a letter-sized sheet of paper and a standard-sized photo, you can make this craft project in only a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper, 8 ½ inch by 11 inch
  • Photo, 4 inch by 6 inch, landscape orientation

Instructions

    • 1

Position the paper horizontally before you. If the paper has a printed design on one side, the design should face down. Fold the right edge even with the left edge and crease the fold.

    • 2

Fold the bottom edge even with the top edge. Crease that fold. Now unfold the last fold you made.

    • 3

Turn the paper so that the first folded edge is the one farthest from you. Fold the top right corner to the middle crease that you made in the last step and crease that fold. Do the same for the opposite corner. Now you have two triangular shapes folded down that meet on the inside edges along the middle crease.

    • 4

Fold the remaining paper that is below the triangles up over the bottoms of the triangles. Now the shape looks somewhat like a sailboat. Crease all the folds and unfold the flap and the two triangles. The paper will still be folded in half with the folded edge away from you.

    • 5

Pick up the paper and open it slightly. Tuck the top right corner inside along the lines of the triangular flap you made in step 3. You will have to reverse the direction of the crease nearest you. Now the triangle will be folded toward the inside of the two halves of the paper.

    • 6

Lay flat and crease the folds. Repeat this procedure for the top left corner. Now you have the two triangular sections of paper tucked inside the folded sheet. They meet in the middle again but inside where you cannot see them.

    • 7

Position the paper with the open edge toward you. Pull the point of the paper down along the middle crease until it reaches the horizontal crease. Crease the fold.

    • 8

Turn the paper so that the open edge is to your right. Place your left forefinger on the point you just folded down, and place your left thumb between the halves of the folded paper. Grasp the point and the top half of the paper and unfold it to the left. Now you will see the unfolded sheet of paper with the two triangular sections standing up.

    • 9

Take the top of the large triangular section standing up nearest you and press it flat, creasing the folds. It will form a new, smaller triangular section. Do the same for the other large triangular section. Now the top and bottom edges of the paper have large, open V shapes pointing toward the middle.

    • 10

Fold the rectangular section of paper on the right side toward the middle along the crease. It will partially cover the right sides of both small triangular sections you made in step 8. Repeat for the rectangular section on the left side.

    • 11

Fold the bottom right corner upward so that the folded part forms a small square. Crease the fold. Once you do this, you will see a triangular pocket on that corner. Repeat this procedure for the other three corners.

    • 12

Place the corners of your photograph into the four triangular pockets. Turn the frame over and fold the triangular section on the back outward slightly so that you can stand the frame up to display the photo.
