How to Make Glass Slide Necklaces

You can use glass microscope slides and a few simple craft materials to create a photo necklace pendant or mini work of art to hang from a necklace. These creative necklace pendants make a great gift if you are using photos or images that mean something special to the recipient. You can use any small image or a tiny object such as small dried flowers to make a personalized and creative piece of jewelry. Most of the materials you need for this project won't break the bank and are found in your local craft store.

    Things You'll Need

    • 2 microscope slides
    • Mylar craft tape
    • Pendant tag
    • Craft glue such as E6000
    • Jump ring
    • Chain

Trace the outside of your glass microscope slide onto a piece of paper and cut it out. Use this small piece of paper as the base of a collage. Cut small images out of a newspaper or old book. Print out images from your computer, sizing them in a photo editing program so they fit between the glass slides. Collect small, flat objects to include in the design such as a few dried flower petals.

Lay one glass slide on a flat surface and place your collage piece on the slide face up or arrange your loose images and objects as you want them to appear in the pendant. Place the other microscope slide on top slowly and gently so you don't cause the images or objects to shift.

Cut two pieces of Mylar tape that are the same length as the top and bottom of the slide and two more pieces that are the same length as the right and left side. Carefully place the edges of the tape on each side and fold each one over one at a time so that they attach the edges of the two slides together. Smooth them out well to press the adhesive of the tape down and eliminate any air bubbles.

Turn the slide pendant over. Apply a thin layer of E6000 glue to the back and lay your blank pendant tag down on top with the hole at the top extending up from the top of the glass slide. Apply gentle pressure to the pendant tag for about one minute. Wait 24 hours for the glue to completely dry. Attach an open jump ring to the hole to hang the pendant from a necklace chain.
