How to Do Face Painting for Children

Children's face painting takes place at birthday parties, carnivals and fairs. Not all face painters are professional. Sometimes, it is just a group of parents volunteering their time at a school fair or fundraising event. It can be disconcerting to paint on children's faces, but it is not that difficult. With a few tips and strategies in place before you even start, it will be a smooth and fun experience.

Instructions

  1. Face Painting

    • 1

Set out a few designs that you are capable of reproducing on the children's faces. Allow them to pick one of them when they first sit down.

    • 2

Make sure to have the parent's consent before you proceed to paint their face.

    • 3

Clean the child's face off with unscented baby wipes.

    • 4

Notice where the child's bangs are, then pull their hair out of their face with a hair band. You will want to draw your design below where the bangs fall.

    • 5

Put the background colors on first. If you are doing a tiger, those colors would be orange, yellow and white.

    • 6

Use your different tools to apply all the details of the faces.

    • 7

Hand the child a small mirror to look at the painting. Let their hair down out of the band for the full effect.

    Tiger Design

    • 8

Paint an area around the mouth white. Paint just under the lip, and just over the lip all the way to the nose.

    • 9

Paint the entire front of the face yellow, from the eyebrows all the way down to the chin. Do not cover the white area.

    • 10

Add orange paint around the yellow. This includes the forehead, closer to the ears, to the very bottom of the chin. Blend it in with the yellow where they meet.

    • 11

Paint eyebrows in white above the eyes. Use a medium brush and follow the child's natural eyebrow, creating points at the end to look like fur.

    • 12

Paint white whiskers around the white patch that you first painted. Add white stripes around the edges of the orange paint.

    • 13

Paint the tip of the nose black, as well as the lips. Add some black stripes alternating with the white ones you just painted.

    • 14

Outline the white whiskers and eyebrows in black and add black dots to the whisker area. Add gold glitter to the face to make it extra special.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that the paints you use are FDA approved to be used on the face and skin.

  • If you use glitter on the children's faces, make sure that it is cosmetic grade glitter, and not craft glitter.

  • Avoid children's mouths, eyes and nostrils unless you are very skilled and have a lot of disposable utensils. These are germ breeding grounds.

  • Try out different tools to find out which ones work best for you and your artwork. Sponges and brushes work differently, but not badly.
