How to Create a Timeline in Microsoft
A timeline is a description of events organized in chronological order. Timelines can be very helpful in assisting students understand a particular subject. In fact, one of the advantages of using a timeline is that it incites organization and clarity. Personal computer (PC) users can create a timeline using Microsoft Office Suite programs. One of the easiest Office programs to use in creating a timeline is Microsoft Word. Word users can create timelines in Word with different colors and designs.

Open Microsoft Word, click on "File," select "Page Setup," and then choose "Landscape" as your page orientation. If you are using Word 2007, click on the "Page Layout" tab, select "Orientation," and then click on "Landscape."

Go to the View menu, select "Toolbars" and then choose "Drawing." If you are using Word 2007, click on the "Insert" tab and then select "Shapes."

Select the Rectangle Tool and then use it to draw a rectangle on the opened Word document. To use the rectangle tool, drag your pointer to draw a long rectangle onto your screen.

Add a color to the rectangle. Click the arrow on the "Fill Color" icon, and then click the color that you want.

Add timeline markers to the rectangle by clicking on the "Line Tool" and then use it to add lines at different areas on the rectangle to suit the type of timeline you are trying to create. You have just created a timeline using Microsoft Word.
Add a Heading

Click on the Drawing Toolbar and then select "Word Art." Word Art allows you to create headings with specific font styles.

Choose a Word Art style and then select "OK." You have selected a Word Art style for your heading.

Apply the style to your timeline. To apply the style to your timeline press and drag the Word Art to position the heading at the top of your page.
Insert Images

Open the image you would like to insert to your timeline, right-click on the image and then select "Copy" to copy the image.

Go to the Word document containing your timeline, right-click on the document and then select "Paste." The timeline document you created now has the image you copied. In order to associate text with the image, right-click the image and then click "Format Picture."

On the Layout tab, select "In Front of Text" and then select "OK." Use a textbox and a caption for your image. To do so, click on the "Select Object" tool, on the drawing toolbar, press CTRL, select the image and then select the caption. Be sure that the objects are placed on the timeline correctly. Use the line tool to connect each of the objects to the timeline captions.
