How to Export Vector Art From Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is a powerful and widely used graphics program that possesses an array of tools the graphic artist can use to perform their tasks. However, Photoshop is primarily a raster graphics program, meaning the images it makes are based on individual dots, unlike vector graphics, which are based on shapes. But it is possible to create the basic structure of a vector graphics image using Photoshop and then take it into a full-fledged vector graphics program, such as Illustrator or CorelDraw.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch out your design on paper. You want to define the shapes you will create in your image. You can also define the colors, although these can't be added in Photoshop.

    • 2

Open Photoshop. Select "File" and click "New" in the document setup dialog, enter whatever size you want to the document and click "OK."

    • 3

Select one of the Shape "Tools," such as the "Pen" or "Rectangular" tool. In the options at the top, turn off "Fill." Create a new layer by clicking on the "New Layer" icon under the "Layers" panel.

    • 4

Use the tool to draw out one of the shapes in your design. Then select the "Convert Point" tool and use it to select the points in the shape to refine the shape. Create a new layer.

    • 5

Repeat Step 4 to create all the elements of your design. Select "File" and click "Save." Name your file.

    • 6

Select "File" and click "Export." From the options, select "Paths to Illustrator." In the dialog, name your file and select the location you want to save to. Click "OK."

    • 7

Open the vector graphics program you are using. Select "File" and click "Open." Browse to the file you saved in step 6 and open it. Now use the tools to fill the shapes with the colors or gradients you selected in step 1. When you are done save your work.
