How to Tow a Ladder on Top of an SUV Rack

Carrying a ladder from one place to another can be tricky, particularly if you drive an SUV and you've got people sitting in the back seat. If you have a roof rack, you can strap the ladder to the rack and transport everything and everybody safely to your destination. This may be an awkward job depending on the height of your SUV, but you can do this in just a few minutes with the right equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a stepladder at the middle of your SUV, and walk up the stepladder while carrying the ladder you want to transport.

    • 2

Set the ladder onto the roof rack of the SUV, making sure it is equally spaced across the cross bars on the rack and that it doesn't hang past the front windshield or the rear bumper of your SUV.

    • 3

Wrap a ratcheting tie-down strap around one of the rungs on the ladder and the cross bar of the roof rack. Tighten down the strap until the ladder is secured to the rack. Repeat this process for the other cross bar on the roof rack.

    • 4

Wrap a ratcheting tie-down strap around the middle of the ladder and through the side bars on the roof rack, working across the width of the vehicle. Tighten down this strap until the ladder can't move from side to side.
