trip around the world quilting

Make a trip around the world in your own home. This quilt is easy to make (as quilts go) and it is especially easy to make by hand.

If you like to do hand sewing while watching television or DVDs, this is a fun crafts project for piecing and quilting.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • scrap fabrics in color schemes
    • scissors
    • needle and thread
    • cardboard or Mylar for a pattern
    • standing hoop or large hoop
      • 1

        Plan the quilt.

Find scrap fabrics you would like to use, and decide on the color scheme for the quilt. A baby quilt or lap quilt like the one shown can be a piecework scrap quilt. This is a patchwork quilt, and can be made on point with the blocks turned like diamonds, but this one is made with squares not on point.

center squares can be solid colors or printed fabrics

        Select the center squares.

Choose four different colors for the center square that will best portray the colors for the entire quilt. After the center squares, the squares will be the same color in rows around the center square. This is the trip around the world.

the green round has twelve squares

Design the quilt in your mind or on paper.

Make a design based on the fabrics available. The row after the center block of four squares will require twelve squares. Each row takes eight more squares, so save the largest colors for the outer rows of the quilt.

        Cut the pattern.

Make a square pattern in the size you want to work with and add half an inch. Four inches is a good size, so a 4 1/2 inch square will make a four-inch square with 1/4 inch seams.

      • 5

        Cut the squares.

Cut with a rotary cutter and board or with scissors to make enough squares to complete the quilt. Remember that each row takes eight more squares than the last one.

      • 6

        Sew the squares.

Sew by hand or machine. This quilt is easy to sew by hand. After the first four squares or the center block is made, work with a single color in a row and piece the row before adding to the center block.

If you choose to sew with the sewing machine, it is easiest to make two long strips and two short strips for each trip around the quilt. The green row in the photo will have two lines of six and two lines of four blocks. Sew the side strips to the center, then the end or longer pieces next.

      • 7

        Cut backing, filler, and binding.

Cut a fabric backing the size of the quilt plus two inches, and cut a batting or filler the size of the quilt top. Binding may be purchased or cut on the bias from a fabric scrap. See Resources below for more information about binding and backing fabric.

        Make the quilt sandwich.

Assemble the quilt with the backing, then filler, then quilt top and baste by hand through all layers. Baste in large stitches from the center out.

      • 9

Quilt or tie to hold together.

Choose to tie with yarn or ribbon for a fast and easy completion, or do a running stitch just around the perimeter of each color. Work with a large standing hoop or a large hoop to keep the sandwich layers together.

Trip around the world quilt completed

        Trim and bind the quilt.

Once the quilting or ties are completed, trim around the edge and sew the binding from the backside, right sides together.

Bring the binding to the front and pin in place. Sew by hand or machine from the front of the quilt, all around the binding.

Sew a trip around the world quilt for a great first-time quilting crafts project.
